Energy saving tips

Easy ways to use less energy and save on bills.

The quickest and easiest way we can all make a difference to climate change is by saving energy in our own homes. Here are some really simple ideas to get you started:

  • Replace your lightbulbs with energy saving ones. Each one can reduce your lighting costs by up to 100 over the lifetime of the bulbs and they last up to 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs
  • Use the washing machine only when you have a full load and chose a 30°C cycle. This will save you 40% energy compared with a 60°C wash
  • Cut heating bills by turning down your thermostat. Reducing the temperature by just 1°C can cut your fuel bill by 10%
  • Switch your TV and computer off rather than leaving them on standby. Those little red lights on televisions waste £116 million of electricity each year in Britain alone
  • Unplug your mobile phone charger when it’s not in use. Across the UK, this wastes over £60 million of electricity and is responsible for a quarter of a million tonnes of CO2 every year
  • Only boil as much water as you need to make your cup of tea or coffee. If everyone boiled only the water they needed we could save enough electricity in a year to run nearly half of the street lighting in the country
  • Wait for hot cooked food to cool down first rather than putting it straight into the fridge or freezer
